Wannacry Ransomware Cyber-Attack: Managing the Crisis

Wannacry Ransomware Cyber-Attack: Managing the CrisisThe ransomware cyber-attack that hit every kind of organizations (hospitals, government agencies, companies) and tens of thousands of computers on 12 May was unprecedented in how quickly and widely it has spread.

If your organization has been impacted directly or indirectly, you should act quickly to contain the outbreak and collect information you may need in order to file an insurance claim.

In the critical period after a cyber-attack, our advice is as follows:

  • Stop the damage. First you have to update your operating system (and be aware of mutation). If you have not yet been able to contain the outbreak — or you are not sure whether you have contained it — you may need to contact a technology vendor and potentially a legal advisor. Your Marsh client executive may be able to assist you in reaching these advisors.
  • Manage the initial response. Communicate the issue within your organisation to stem the spread of the attack and assist in tracking your cyber response team’s claim-related activity. Again, Marsh may be able to assist you in reaching communications advisors.

If you have a cyber insurance policy:

  • Your policy may include an “assistance cover.” This may provide access to a hotline — available 24 hours a day — through which you can contact technology, legal, and communications advisors. This could be critical in helping you recover and more quickly return to normal operations.
  • Document the timeline of events. Tracking what occurred from the time of the breach through full recovery will assist in estimating the “period of recovery” for the loss.
  • Establish a protocol for identifying and properly categorizing claim-related costs. Catalogue all business interruption, extra expense, or other financial impacts, even those not easily captured.

Marsh’s advisors can help you to manage your response, recovery, and claims filing steps, including providing access to forensic accounting services as necessary. We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide you with guidance and assistance.
